A 24-year-old catwalk model from Slough has been entered into the Guinness World Records as the youngest female with a full-grown beard.
Harnaam Kaur was given the title in this years Guinness world records and said the record was “absolutely humbling” after her beard was measured at six inches in some places.
The citation in the Guinness world record reads: “Now with a beard measuring as long as six inches in places, she overcame years of bullying to take ownership of her appearance and achieve this record title at the age of 24 years 282 days.”
Ms Kaur, who suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal condition that causes her to grow excess facial hair, also became the first female with a beard to walk the runway at London Fashion Week earlier this year.
After being diagnosed with the condition at 12-years-old, Kaur began to meet the struggles of puberty mixed with social expectations and became the target of bullies which left her feeling suicidal.
She explained the pain she endured to try to fit in and the extensive treatments she once had undergone to remove her beard, saying: “I was crying my eyes out. I did that [facial waxing] every other day because my hair grew so fast – and shaved in between.”
“They called me everything under the sun, threatened me with knives and stabbed me with pens,”
She added: “I wanted to punish my body for looking this way. I wanted to hurt it.”
Ms Kaur eventually came to terms with her condition and said: “I decided to turn all that negative energy into positive energy, and grasp hold of life. I wanted to live a happy life, and I made the decision to keep my beard and accept my body for the way it was formed.”
Even though she still battles with a lot of hate today, including death threats, she remains positive and say’s she is ‘super proud’ to hold the record.
She said: “I am super proud to hold this record, the inner child in me is so pleased. I grew up reading this book, I even tried breaking some of my own records wanting to be in this book. It is amazing to be valued and celebrated being a Bearded Lady. I am proud to hold this amazing record.”
“I hope those who read or see my record can take away positivity, inspiration and realise that no matter who you are or what you look like, you are officially amazing!”
