Sandeep Singh claimed to own a six bedroom house and a fleet of luxury cars – when he actually worked as a concern finisher on construction sites.

A court heard the 23-year-old covered his online dating  profile with pictures of luxury cars, used a fake name and pretended to be four years older than his actual age.

Singh and a woman, from Stenson Fields, Derbs., began a relationship after they started chatting over the internet.

When the pair arranged to meet in person, the fraudster arrived to collect her in a Mercedes with a private number plate.

Just weeks after meeting on the dating site, the couple had already visited potential wedding venues in the hope of one day tying the knot.

After his lover asked him what to do with cash she’d received from selling a house, the defendant proposed that they pool their resources together to buy another property.

But after transferring £19,850 into his account, the victim discovered Singh’s real name after becoming suspicious.

An online search revealed his true identity and she discovered the previous year he had been convicted of dangerous driving with excess alcohol.

The woman asked for the money back but he said she would have to wait at which point police were called.

Singh later admitted fraud by false representation and driving while disqualified.

On Friday Singh, of Tipton, West Mids., was jailed for 22 months at Derby Crown Court.

Sentencing, Recorder Heidi Kubik said: “You promised you would look after her financially, that you would both profit from the money she would give you.

“She handed in her notice. Now without her job, she’s lost her financial security. She’s lost her faith in people.”

Justin Wigoder, prosecuting, told the court: “The defendant gave a misleading impression about his wealth – said he lived in a big six-bedroom house, owned lots of properties and lots of expensive cars, and had pictures of expensive cars on his profile.

“He said he would be able to provide for both of them and she would no longer have to do her job, and so she handed in her notice.”
