A council gardener was filmed shamelessly kicking flower holders and trampling over graves at a cemetery in Walsall, West Midlands, after complaints from families about their loved ones graves being ruined.
Mehboob Matloob, 45, who works for the charity Walsall Helping Hands, decided to investigate after receiving several complaints from the local Islamic community about graves of loved ones being ruined.
He caught the Walsall Council-paid gardener, who is dressed in blue and wearing protective goggles, shamelessly kicking over flowers vases and walking over graves instead of cutting around them.
Mr Matloob said: “After complaints I went to the crematorium and videoed the worker myself last week. He was strimming the grass and just walked across several graves instead of cutting around them.
‘You can see him kicking a flower pot around too. I said to him ‘do you realise that’s a grave?’ and he said ‘Yes, what do you want me to do, this is how we do it all the time’.
‘He told me to speak to the people in charge of the cemetery and when I got on my phone to the council he got back into his van and drove off.’
Mr Matloob added: ‘It is just totally unacceptable, a lot of the graves have been there a long time and could collapse if these workers keep walking all over them.
‘My younger brother and grandmother are buried at the cemetery and to see this kind of thing happening to other families is just not on.
‘Workers are crushing people, it’s all about respect and this should not be happening.’
A spokesperson for Walsall Council confirmed an investigation had been launched after the footage emerged.
They added: ‘The council has received a complaint about maintenance works at Streetly cemetery.
‘This has been formally logged and we will now follow the appropriate complaints procedure.’
