A man who was stabbed in a racist attack with such force the knife broke off on his back, may never be able to walk again.
The victim, who cannot be named for fear of reprisal, underwent a nine hour operation to remove the blade which narrowly missed his spine.
The attack took place after England’s Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland last Monday at Khan’s Takeaway on Milnrow Road, Rochdale.
Witnesses and staff at the takeaway claim that the ‘group of men’ came into the shop using racist language.
The group of men were armed with bars and knives and started to assault the the staff at the takeaway.
During the attack, the 25 year old victim who was in the chip shop as a customer, was stabbed in the back.
He was taken to hospital were he underwent a major operation on last week. Doctors said he was ‘millimetres away from death’.
It has also been alleged that the group of men targeted a Mosque in the same area, kicking off its gates. before going into the chip shop.
A friend of the victim told the Manchester Evening News: “We’ve been told he may never walk again. We thought we would lose him. He is the rock of his family, if they didn’t have him they would be lost.
“We have received so much support from so many people and that is keeping him going.
“But the hate needs to stop in this world. We are all human beings, we need to support each other, stop these racist attacks.
“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He could have died. It’s been heartbreaking.”
The friend added: “He’s in so much pain and not saying much. We are all praying for him.”
