Money-lender Datta Phuge paid £14,000 for the gild shirt, earning him the nickname ‘gold man’.
He purchased the gold shirt, which took 15 goldsmiths 2 weeks to make, to ‘attract woman’.
He said at the time: ‘I know I am not the best looking man in the world but surely no woman could fail to be dazzled by this shirt?’
He was reportedly attacked by 12 men with sickle and stones on Thursday night after being invited to a birthday party.
It is believed that the murder is a result of a dispute over money.
Mr Phuge’s 22 year old son was also present during the attack but managed to escape without injury.
Police inspector Navath Ghogare said: ‘we are investigating how Mr Phuge reached the open ground where he was murdered’,
