Mother and father arrested after death of baby hours after they attend court for assaulting him

Police have launched an investigation after a three month old baby died hours after his parents attended court for previous charges of assaulting him.

The baby, Rifat Mohammed, was taken to hospital on Monday with critical injuries.

Police arrested the parents and charged them with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and two counts of child cruelty.

The couple appeared before Thames magistrates on the following day and were remanded in custody.

On Tuesday afternoon baby Rifat died and the police are now in discussion with the Crown Prosecution Service about bringing further charges on the parents Mohammed Miah, 36, and Rebeka Nazmin, 31, following Rifat’s death.
