A murder investigation is under way after a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death in Kellett Street, in Wardleworth, Rochdale, near the town centre, at around 4am this morning.

The victim has been named locally by friends as Akbar Masood.

It is believed that he was injured trying to protect a younger man who was being attacked after a house party.

Police officers arrived on the scene shortly after 4am after reports that a man had been stabbed in the abdomen.

Officers tried to revive him and carried out CPR but he died a short while after arriving at the hospital.

Witnesses described hearing men shouting in the street in the early hours of the men leading up to the stabbing.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with his murder is currently being held in custody today for questioning.

Friends paid tribute to Masood, who they said had a ‘heart of gold’ and ‘amazing sense of humour.’

NaeemUllah, 22, who said he was devastated by the news of his death.

“I am in total shock that this has happened,” he said. “He was such a nice person. He had a heart of gold. He’d always offer to give you a lift if you were running late for work, that kind of thing.

“He was very helpful and had an amazing sense of humour. He was someone you knew you could have fun with.

“My heart really goes out to his family. It is awful.”

Other friends took to social media to pay tributes to Masood and express their shock.

Sajid Mohammed posted: “My brother Akbar Masood has passed away. Am heart-broken. Please pray for him. He was a really nice guy.

“May Allah give him a high place in Jannah. Forgive his sins and give his family, all our friends sabar.”

Shahzad Saleem posted: “Can everyone please take a minute and pray for my brother Akbar , my brother you will never be forgotten you will always be in my heart , I can’t believe that you’ve gone , I miss you so much Kasam , may Allah give him and his family sabar Inshallah may Allah SWT grant my brother the highest rank in Jannah Ameen..R.I.P.”

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jones said: “First and foremost I would like to offer my deepest condolences to this man’s loved ones, who we are currently working to provide with support from specially trained officers.

“I know anytime an incident like this occurs it would undoubtedly cause concern in the community but I would like to assure the public that we have launched a full investigation.”
